Description

I am in the process of doing a 9-frame mosaic of the Vela SNR recent, and it just so happened that one of my favourite objects lies right on the edge of the field in two panels of the mosaic. Not great planning, but my telescope/camera combo is supposed to be pretty good out to the field edges. So I thought I would see if I could turn a potential dis-advantage into an advantage by cropping and stacking the 211 subs in which the Pencil Nebula appeared in both panels of the mosaic.

Somewhat a labour of love, I must admit.

But I was pretty surprised how the image turned out, with minimal distortion or other image artefacts.

Not sure if it is significantly better that the image that will appear in the final mosaic, but fun to do. In a masochistic sort of way.

If I had aimed to image the Pencil specifically, I probably would not have done it with a 100mm telescope and an OSC with big pixels - but its OK as a bonus.
